Darkness is:
A seed planted in the Earth.
The womb where we all come.
The home of our organs inside our bodies.
The velvety depths of sleep.
The dark. It sustains us, births us, keeps us alive, and we all return to it at the end of the day. So why does it get such a bad wrap? Isn't it the most natural state of being? Imagine if those seeds stayed away from the dark, we wouldn't have fruits or veggies. We want the baby to remain in the womb and not rush out because it's afraid of the dark. We don't want our organs to see the light of day. And there's nothing like a good night's sleep.
But still, when told to embrace the darkness, it's easy to dread, fear and resist.
The world's tilt creates moments of extreme light or darkness, which we call solstices. This week is a solstice and change of seasons. The Earth's dance twirls in a new direction, and we're invited to do the same.
If you are in the northern hemisphere, you'll experience the darkest day of the year, or in the southern, the days will get shorter after peak daylight. Wherever we are, we all contend with darkness daily. It's darkest before dawn, and as we move through this galactic tilt, it feels like it.
A dark moon this solstice asks us to recharge our batteries, even though the world might sell us on the hassle of preparing for a busy season. A few moments or even a day of rest will load us into the coming weeks, months and even next calendar year.
If life's a spiralling circle, endings are beginnings and vice versa. However, a start can look like a conclusion. Imagine what a seed feels like when it's buried into the ground. Growing a plant is surprisingly close to laying a loved one to rest. Where's the start of life, and where's the end?
As we enter this period of darkness, clarity might dodge our logical minds. Validation from the external world could be scarce.
Are we heading in the right direction?
Are we accomplishing anything?
Is this even worth it?
How do we find context when it's dark and we can't see with our physical senses? We trust our hearts and light a candle from there, bringing light to the darkness. This means joining our shadows and meeting them where we are instead of trying to rush our fears away. We need the darkness. If it were sunny all the time, we'd miss out on the ambiance of a bonfire, a candlelight meal, a glowing Christmas tree or fireworks in the sky.
Epic shifts are on the horizon. Every year I get excited about upcoming astrology transits because I sincerely believe the cosmic narrative unfolding is an exciting ride. But the past few years have been tiring, destructive, tearing down the old and breaking up the concrete-type vibes. Those heavy-hitting transits have been full-on since 2008, when Pluto entered Capricorn. Thankfully, 2023 has Pluto changing signs, new Eclipses and a bunch of other upbeat energy inviting us to dance at a new tempo. We're changing the radio station from heavy metal to disco, and the shift is instrumental.
I'll dive into 2023's collective energy in the coming weeks via email. Until then, it's a time to settle into yourself, enjoy the starry night sky, remember you are made of stardust, and your dawn is inevitable.
